The Training Unit is staffed by one captain, one sergeant, and an administrative assistant. In addition to the staff assigned to the unit, the Department has a number of instructors that teach courses in their area of expertise such as Domestic Violence, Juvenile procedures, Human Diversity etc.
The Training Unit provides employees of the Department with high quality training, both at the entry level and in-service, and has the responsibility for coordinating and arranging all outside training. The Training Unit processes all departmental travel, and posts training and seminar related matters. The Unit is responsible for the coordination and monitoring of academy training for newly hired officers, conducting both pre and post academy orientation for new employees. The Unit is also responsible for maintaining training records for all employees, in accordance with FDLE requirements.
The City of Miami Gardens demands that its police officers maintain the highest level of proficiency, skill and professionalism. The Training Unit is a crucial entity in maintaining these high standards, and coordinates all classroom and field training activities, including all State mandated training. The Training Unit has the responsibility for conducting all firearms training and ensuring that sworn officers maintain a high degree of skill with both firearms and non-lethal weapons. All sworn police officers qualify annually with their firearms with recertification of non-lethal weapons included. The Training Unit has the responsibility for coordinating and arranging all outside training, as well as the coordination and monitoring of comparative compliance academy training for newly sworn out-of-state officers, while conducting both pre and post academy orientation for new employees. The Training Unit has responsibility for maintaining training records for all employees and operating all classroom facilities. Additionally, the Training Unit conducts research, training and development of weapons, equipment, tactics and procedures.
